I have been using Omni Lights for well over 10 years and it is an outstanding light in every possible way. The Omni is an open face 500 Watt tungsten light with a 6:1 variable focus beam. The main body is made primarily of Aluminum alloy. It weighs just 1.7 pounds, 2.4 pounds with the cord. The focus is controlled by a very easy to use knob/lever located just above the adjustable rubber handle. Its a fantastic design as operating the focus knob feels completely natural. In fact its so well placed and so well designed that even the most minute of adjustments are made with ease. Its a very simple design and that is ultimately one of the reasons why this is such a great system of lights.

Overall the light consists of the main body, an adjustable rubber handle, an accessory arm, the stand bracket and a protective screen. The adjustable rubber handle easily folds up along the right side of the main body. This decreases the overall size of the light when packed away. The rotating arm that holds the Gel Holder or umbrella folds over to the left side of the body. When you want to use the arm you simply pull it up over the top side of the light. The stand bracket fits on studs 5/8" (1.59 cm) and smaller and even the stand bracket rotates up and out of the way during storage. This design of having everything fold up when not in use makes the light far easier to store and it makes it far less susceptible to damage especially when traveling.

These lights are either sold individually or in kits. If you purchase them individually you get just the light, cord and protective screen, nothing else. All of the accessories must be purchased separately. Some of the accessories available for this light include 4 way barn doors, Gel holder, scrims, snoots, and interchangeable reflectors. There are even accessories made from 3rd party companies. The barn doors and gel holder are the 2 that should be considered mandatory.

I am primarily an architectural photographer and while I use lots of different kinds of lights, the Omni's play a major role in my overall lighting kit. I have 2 cases of Omni lights. Each case contains 5 regular Omni's, 1 DP Omni (Double Power Omni), cords for all 6 lights, 4 sets of barn doors, 2 full sets of snoots, 6 Tota Frame gel holders, 2 umbrella's, 4 Dichroic Filters, 6 diffused glass filters, 3 full scrims, 3 half scrims, and 2 graduated scrims. The omni light is one of the most versatile lights I have ever worked with. Day or night, rain of shine, inside or outside, as a main light or fill light. The omni just doesn't disappoint.

One of my favorite things about this light is the ease with which it can be taken apart and repaired. Replacement parts are easily ordered from Lowel and the repairs are about as easy as repairs can get. This allows you to keep your lights in pristine working order and it extends the overall life of the lamp CONSIDERABLY. Every omni light I have ever purchased is still in working order. Once a month I open up all my omni's. I clean them up, spray some WD-40 in the joints, tighten up the screws and make any necessary repairs. Overall it takes very little time and again it keeps your kit in great shape. Of course this ease of repair is equally important out in the field. Just make sure you pack a small tool kit with replacement bulbs and your prepared for pretty much any technical problem you can run into with these lights.

The bottom line - The Omni light is a fantastic line of hot light especially when you factor in the price. There are lights out there that are 2-3 times as expensive yet still not as well rounded as the Omni. Its easily one of the best lights on the market and will last a VERY long time if taken care of.
