Product Description

OMAPURE offers one of the purest Omega-3 supplements on the market with a 70% concentration of EPA and DHA, the two main active ingredients in Omega-3. This ultra pure concentration means consumers need to take less OMAPURE liquid than lower quality brands. Higher purity also results in a better taste and fewer side effects. OMAPURE's molecularly distilled fish oil is the only one verified by USP (United States Pharmacopeia), the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and OTC drugs in the US. Since most Omega-3 is sourced from fish oil, it is critical to ensure the absence of mercury and other dangerous contaminants. Each and every OMAPURE batch is tested by the world's most stringent third party Omega-3 testing lab, IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) and each batch has received the highest 5 star rating from IFOS. OMAPURE is the most economical choice at the premium end of the market.

OMAPURE Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3 Fish Oil - LIQUID (5 Bottles; 6 fl. oz.) Review

*****
This is a side-by-side comparison of five liquid omega-3 supplements: Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra Liquid (Concentrated), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil, and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid).

There are three major components of omega-3 in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

SOURCE OF FISH OIL AND UDO'S OIL: Unlike fish oil, which comes primarily from fish such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel, cod, pollock and whiting, Udo's oil comes from fresh flax, sesame and sunflower seeds, as well as oils from evening primrose, rice germ and oat germ.

IFOS: The International Fish Oil Standards Program ("IFOS") (Google "IFOS Consumer Reports") test results of this product, which rated it five stars (top rating), reflected that the product label claim, upon which the above analysis is based, is conservative when compared to the IFOS batch test results. IFOS is an independent third party omega-3 testing organization that provides batch-specific summaries of a product's IFOS testing results. The reports include a 5-star rating for each product containing greater than 60% concentration of EPA and DHA per gram of fish oil, allowing consumers to compare fish oil products based on their safety, purity and quality. Most of the highly rated omega-3 products are listed. Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil is listed as a five star omega-3 fish oil product, which is the highest rating attainable.

If you use the IFOS batch test results for Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, you get 875 mgs of EPA, 522 mgs of DHA, and 326 mgs of "other," omega-3, for a total omega-3 content of 1723 mgs per teaspoon.**

TRIGLYCERIDES VS ETHYL ESTERS FORM: Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra Liquid (Concentrated), and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) are a triglycerides form of omega-3 fish oil. Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil is an ethyl esters form of omega-3 fish oil. There has been considerable debate about which is better, but I believe that debate has been over-exaggerated and is unwarranted.

Nutrigold is a respected company that manufactures BOTH an ethyl esters and a triglycerides form of omega-3 fish oil. This is what the Nutrigold website has to say about the two forms:

"Most fish oil supplements are either available in Ethyl Ester form or the Triglyceride form. Structurally, the major difference between the two forms is that in Ethyl Ester, the fatty acids (EPA & DHA) are esterified to an ethanol backbone, while in TG, the fatty acids are esterified to a glycerol alcohol backbone; there are absolutely no differences in the two forms of fish oil in terms of stability. The vast majority of clinical studies examining supplemental Omega-3s have been performed on the Ethyl Ester form and results from studies comparing the relative bioavailability of the EE form versus the TG form have found increased bioavailability of the TG form in the short-term (2 weeks), but this difference disappears when fish oil is routinely supplemented and a steady state has been achieved over a longer period of time.

The scientific evidence currently available does not point to any significant differences between the two forms in terms of bioavailability or health benefits when taken over extended periods of time (which is the norm for most individuals) and the decision to supplement with the TG form versus the EE form is, in most cases, a matter of personal preference."

POTENCY:

When measured against Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil has much more omega-3 (2550 mgs per teaspoon vs 1600 mgs per teaspoon).

When measured against Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil has much more omega-3 (2550 mgs per teaspoon vs 1725 mgs per teaspoon).

When measured against Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Extra Liquid (concentrated), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil has much less omega-3 (2550 mgs per teaspoon vs 3500 mgs per teaspoon).

When measured against Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil has much less omega-3 (2550 mgs per teaspoon vs 6000 mgs per tablespoon). However, three teaspoons equals one tablespoon. So, effectively, Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil has more omega-3 potency than Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid).

PRICE:

When measured against Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil costs much more per teaspoon ($.83 vs $.50).

When measured against Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil costs much more per teaspoon ($.83 vs $.40).

When measured against Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Extra Liquid (concentrated), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil costs much less per teaspoon ($.83 vs $1.27).

When measured against Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil costs less ($.83 per teaspoon vs $1.02 per tablespoon). However, three teaspoons equals one tablespoon. So, effectively, Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil costs much more than Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid).

SOY: Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) contain soy. The others do not contain soy.

GMOs: None of these supplements contain GMOs.

CHOLESTEROL: All of these supplements except Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) contain cholesterol.

VEGETARIAN: Only Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) is vegetarian.

KOSHER: Only Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) is certified Kosher.

VITAMIN D3: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra Liquid (Concentrated) contains 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D3. I don't believe this is terribly significant, as Vitamin D3 can be purchased for very little money, and lots of folks who take it consume more than 1000 I.U. daily. It is my opinion that Vitamin D3 is an unnecessary additive.

MEALS: Any ethyl esters based and triglycerides based omega-3 fish oil is best taken with a meal containing some fat, as they are more efficiently absorbed when taken with food.

OPINION: All five of these liquid omega-3 fish oil supplements are excellent. Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Extra Liquid (concentrated) is one of the richest, most concentrated sources of omega-3 oil available on the market, but it is extremely expensive. Likewise, Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) has extremely high potency and it is a lot less expensive than Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Extra Liquid (concentrated). Both Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) contain soy. Both Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil and Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) contain cholesterol. Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) is the only one of these products that is vegetarian and certified Kosher.

RATING:

I rated Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil four stars. The lesser potency and the presence of soy and cholesterol were sufficient for me to deduct one star from Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil.

I rated Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra (Liquid)(Concentrated) five stars, although it is extremely expensive.

I rated Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) five stars because it is extremely potent, reasonably priced, is vegetarian, and is certified Kosher, although it contains soy.

I rated Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated) five stars because, while its potency is not as high as Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra (Liquid)(Concentrated), it is a lot less expensive.

I rated Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil five stars because it is reasonably potent and reasonably priced.

I have separately reviewed all of these products.

* One tablespoon equals three teaspoons.
