Not only do I suffer from Degenerative disk Disease, Spinal Stenosis, and a host of other debilitating back issues, I also suffer from morbid obesity, a condition that has been exacerbated by the copious amounts of steroids that have been pumped into my spinal canal.
Before buying this back support I did a lot of research and this is the only support (3x/3+) that was advertised to fit a man of my girth.I am 5'9" tall and 462lbs( 150lbs of that is due to steroids and immobility.
While researching this brace I found that the most common question asked on every site selling this brace is "does it support an abdominal skirt?" or in layman's terms, "does it hold up a belly that overhangs?"
Well here is the answer everyone is waiting for.: YES and NO..
Let my be more specific. If you are looking for something that will act as a hammock for your belly fat and pull it back upwards like a wonder bra does for large breasted women then the answer is no. It does not defy gravity.
BUT......What it does do is support your back and stomach by having them act as counter balances for one another. The brace is applied in two pieces. The first piece is placed as low on the belly as possible without hindering your legs while walking, and loosely Velcro'd into place using it's elastic strap around the back. Then the back piece is placed properly over the lower back and it's two Velcro sides are pulled around your sides and then attached to the front piece. The application is completed by grabbing the two elastic Velcro straps attached to the center on the front piece and pulling them back to be attached to the back piece near your sides.
This set up has the back piece sitting higher than the front and gives wonderful support, and added endurance, for walking and standing with my back issues.
I have noticed though that the added pressure tends to cause my damaged disk at L5 area to pain a little sometimes under the pressure, kinda like wrapping a sprained ankle feels. Over all I would say that this brace is more than paid for itself by allowing me to complete an entire shopping trip without having to constantly sit down and rest my back. The only surprise was that the directions called for some sort of specialized heater to warm the plastic insert before it is to be molded to fit your back. Since I have neither a warmer nor a physical therapist to aid me in such, I simply placed the insert in the brace and strapped it on, and it has worked just fine. I highly recommend this brace for anyone of large girth needing extra support to aid in back pain.
