I bought Allimax-Pro, 450mg, to combat an upper respiratory infection of my sinuses and throat I have been battling for 2 weeks. This is a secondary bacterial infection, and I was diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis as a complication of this infection. I have a mild primary immunodeficiency disorder (pneumococcal antibody deficiency), and consequently had great hope that I could use Allicin products to combat this infection and perhaps preventatively as a natural oral antibiotic in the future. I had hoped this product would be a godsend. My hopes were high because I have had some degree of success eating many cloves of raw garlic (to my wife's chagrin), using garlic juice both for digestion (again to my wife's chagrin) and as nose drops (which don't create a strong odor, except during an intimate moment). I didn't want to eat 3 to 9 bulbs of raw garlic, according to the book "Herbal Antibiotics" - which is the recommended dose during an acute infection - and garlic juice is a strong emetic, meaning you will throw up if you drink too much of it at once. Additionally, I would much prefer to take Allicin over pharmaceutical antibiotics, as Allicin would have no chance of facilitating resistant strains of bacteria and would kill viral and fungal infections in the process.
I still very much believe garlic should be the #1 natural antibiotic and juicing garlic or chewing it raw does release 33 active sulfur compounds, so it is effective in that respect, but my experience suggests that stabilized allicin products are just not anywhere near as effective or potent as pharmaceutical antibiotics such as penicillin, for instance.
I started taken Allimax pro 450 mg, twice per day, for the first 5 days of the infection. After 5 days, I stepped up the amount of Allimax Pro that I took to 1800 mg, twice per day, for 5 days. This is the recommended maximum dose to take every 12 hours for an upper respiratory infection, according to instructions on Alliultra. My infection consisted of plenty of thick green mucus in my sinuses and upper throat, and a groggy feeling to accompany that. During the time of my infection, I took the standard precautions such as having plenty of rest, drinking plenty of water, significantly restricting my carbohydrate intake, to name a few. I also do pulsatile irrigation multiple times per day, up to 6 times, using breathe-ease xl with 2 teaspoons of xylitol. I also drank multiple cups of hot green tea, up to 6 times, each day. The end result of all this effort? There hasn't been any noticeable difference in consistency or amount of thick green mucus as a result of taking Allimax Pro. Generally, when I take an oral antibiotic, after 5 days, the infection dissipates. This time, my infection continues and I am left to consider other options, such as consistent use of garlic nose drops or a trip to the doctor.
Puzzled, as I read some people claiming stabilized allicin as their miracle product, I did a little research into why Allicin might not work as well as penicillin, for instance. (I have sometimes questioned if I might need to use penicillin as a prophylactic antibiotic). First off, I should mention that garlic when crushed breaks into 33 sulfur-compounds, so it has a very broad bacteria-fighting mechanism. Second, however, is that stabilized allicin is just nowhere near as potent as penicillin. Allicin is considered 1% as potent as penicillin, so 100 mg of allicin is tantamount in potency to 1 mg of penicillin. Stated differently, 1 mg of allicin equals 15 standard units of penicillin. 1670 units of penicillin equals 1 mg of penicillin, which is equivalent to 111.33 mg of allicin. Using this criterion, if I take 1800 mg of allicin, I am only getting the equivalent of 16.167 mg of penicillin for. This product costs $100 for 100 pills, or roughly $1 per pill. So, if you were to ingest the entire bottle in one sitting (which I am NOT recommending, of course), you would receive the equivalent of 404.175 mg of penicillin. That's not much penicillin to do the job. In other words, you are spending about $1 per pill which equals only 4.04 mg of penicillin.
That's why this product was unfortunately not effective as an oral antibiotic to treat the acute sinus infection I am experiencing. I do, however, strongly applaud the efforts of those who are investigating the antibacterial effects of garlic and still stand by my belief that garlic is the best natural antibiotic on this planet, which is why I will continue to juice it for $0.66 a bulb.
