The cafeteria at work uses NatureWorks compostable containers for soup. They are sturdy and hold up to hot liquids as advertised. At first, I didn't even realize these were special containers because they worked just as well as the non-compostable ones I've seen for years.

One caveat, though, is that they're labeled "not microwavable". I've put them in the microwave without any damage occurring, although I am not sure what the heat does to the polymers and if there's any leeching out of the chemicals in the laminate.

A reusable non-disposable container is best for the Earth, but in food service situations where this is not practical, this is the next best thing.
